The Vision Shell package was created with the goal of providing a programming environment in which programs used for scientific experimentation are easy to create and run on the Macintosh. The Vision Shell hides many of the Macintosh programming intricacies by setting up a standard environment in which to conduct experiments. It is especially well suited to psychophysics and psychology experiments.
The Vision Shell is a generic experimental environment -- it is, in a sense, a program upon which you will add subroutines. It can be used to run many different kinds of experiments. However, any experiment that you create will have certain features in common with all other Vision Shell programs.
The Vision Shell has its roots in an early experimental package created for a vision research laboratory. Because it was quite common for the researchers in this lab to require graphic displays a whole set of subroutines was created to simplify graphics on the Macintosh. While researchers may choose to use these routines they are, by no means, necessary - one could use the Vision Shell for quite some time without using these routines. However, if the work that you plan on doing involves many graphic operations then you may find the built-in graphic routines quite useful.
